Project Objectives & SDG Alignment

Project Objectives

The Transnational Education for a Low-Carbon Built Environment project is designed to:

  1. Develop open teaching resources that embed sustainability principles in higher education curricula, focusing on structural reuse, whole-life carbon assessment (WLCA), and circular economy design.
  2. Strengthen institutional collaboration between Brunel University London (BUL) and the British University in Egypt (BUE), building capacity for joint education, research, and knowledge exchange.
  3. Provide professional training for academics, students, and practitioners in the UK and Egypt to support adoption of international standards and best practice in low-carbon construction.
  4. Promote industry–academic partnerships that accelerate the uptake of innovative methods in the built environment, supporting sustainable growth and green skills.
  5. Build a platform for future collaboration, enabling the continuation of UK–Egypt engagement on climate action and sustainable development.

Alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This project directly contributes to the achievement of several UN Sustainable Development Goals:

List
SDG 4: Quality Education

By developing open educational resources, training, and curricula that integrate sustainability into higher education.

List
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

By promoting innovation in construction through structural reuse, WLCA, and circular economy methods.

List
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

By equipping future graduates with the skills to design and manage low-carbon, resource-efficient buildings and infrastructure.

List
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

By embedding reuse and circular economy practices into education and industry.

List
SDG 13: Climate Action

By reducing carbon emissions through improved design methods and knowledge exchange, aligned with Egypt’s and the UK’s national climate commitments.
